Chair of House Commission X, Hetifah Sjaifudian, views the case of alleged verbal sexual harassment involving dozens of students in the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Law environment as a serious violation. Hetifah calls for a transparent and accountable investigation.

“In response to the case of alleged harassment through a group chat involving students from the University of Indonesia Faculty of Law, I consider this a serious violation of ethical values and safety in the campus environment,” said Hetifah to reporters on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

Hetifah emphasised that firm action must be taken against the involved students. She hopes the sanctions imposed will be objective and based on credible investigation results.

“Firm action needs to be given to those proven to be involved, as a form of justice for the victims as well as a deterrent effect. However, sanctions must be imposed objectively and based on credible investigation results, especially since the involved students have apologised,” she stated.

This Golkar legislator emphasised the importance of a transparent internal campus investigation process. She mentioned that this case has become a national concern.

“In addition, I also remind that the handling of this case must refer to Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024, which regulates the obligations of higher education institutions in preventing and handling violence, including verbal violence in digital spaces,” Hetifah explained.

“In this context, the application of sanctions must refer to applicable provisions, including Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024, and be carried out fairly, proportionally, and based on objective investigation results,” she added.

It is known that UI is conducting an investigation into the alleged verbal sexual harassment case involving dozens of students in the Faculty of Law environment. The campus side affirmed that verbal sexual violence is a serious violation.

“UI affirms that every form of sexual violence, including verbal and occurring in digital or offline interactions, constitutes a serious violation of the university’s core values, academic community code of ethics, and applicable legal regulations,” said Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Relations Erwin Agustian Panigoro at the UI Depok campus, as quoted by Antara, on Tuesday (14/4).

Erwin stated that the investigation process is currently underway through the University of Indonesia’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS) with a victim-centered approach, upholding principles of justice, confidentiality, and caution. He said this process includes verifying reports, summoning parties, gathering evidence, and coordinating with related units at the faculty and university levels.

Meanwhile, FHUI has taken initial steps including internal tracing and summoning suspected students. The FHUI Student Representative Council has imposed organisational sanctions by revoking active membership status for several students, as stated in Decree Number 007/SK/BPMFHUI/IV/2026.
