House Commission X Condemns Brimob Officer's Fatal Assault on Madrasah Student, Demands Strict Punishment
Jakarta, VIVA – Chair of House of Representatives Commission X, Hetifah Sjaifudian, has strongly condemned the act of violence committed by Bripda MS, a member of the National Police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob), against a madrasah student identified as AT (14) in Tual City, Maluku, which resulted in the student’s death.
According to Hetifah, the incident constitutes a humanitarian tragedy and a serious indictment of the state’s efforts to protect children and guarantee the safety of students.
“Violence by security apparatus against civilians, particularly against a child who is still a student, cannot be justified under any circumstances,” Hetifah said in a statement on Sunday, 22 February 2026.
She emphasised that schools and public spaces must remain safe environments for children to grow and learn. Repressive actions resulting in loss of life not only wound the sense of justice but also undermine public trust in state institutions.
Hetifah called for legal proceedings to be conducted transparently, objectively, and firmly through both criminal mechanisms and professional code of conduct enforcement. There must be no impunity for violations that result in death.
Under the national criminal law framework, assault causing death carries serious consequences and must be enforced without compromise.
She also urged a comprehensive review of the training, supervision, and standard operating procedures governing the use of force by security personnel, particularly in interactions with civilians and children.
Hetifah expressed her deepest condolences to the victim’s family and called on all relevant parties to oversee the handling of this case and similar cases through to completion, in the interest of justice and the protection of Indonesian students.
The incident reportedly began when two siblings, both madrasah students, were riding a motorcycle. Without clear explanation, Arianto was allegedly struck on the head with a helmet by Bripda MS.
The blow caused the victim to lose control and fall, sustaining a severe head impact.
Several witnesses reported that Arianto experienced bleeding from his nose and mouth before being rushed to Karel Sadsuitubun Regional Hospital. However, his life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead on Friday, 20 February 2026.
Meanwhile, the victim’s elder brother, Nasri Karim, suffered a broken right arm and remains under intensive care. He denied reports claiming that he and his younger brother were involved in illegal street racing, stating that the incident occurred suddenly without any prior warning.
