House of Representatives Commission III Deputy Chairman Moh. Rano Alfath has commended National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and his ranks for imposing a dishonourable discharge on a Maluku Regional Police Mobile Brigade officer, First Class Private MS, in connection with the fatal assault of a madrasah student identified as AT (14) in Tual City. Rano described the move as a demonstration of the police force’s commitment to safeguarding institutional integrity and enforcing rules consistently.

“We at Commission III of the House of Representatives commend Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and the entire leadership, particularly the Head of the Police Professional and Security Division and the Maluku Regional Police, for taking decisive action by imposing a dishonourable discharge on the Mobile Brigade member who was found to have committed a serious violation resulting in the death of a madrasah student in Tual City, Maluku,” Rano said when contacted on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

Rano stated that the dismissal was also important for preserving the dignity of the police institution and demonstrating to the public that there is zero tolerance for acts of violence, especially those resulting in loss of life. The Banten-based legislator emphasised that firmness towards errant officers is a key indicator in measuring the integrity and credibility of a law enforcement institution.

“It is not easy for an institution to take decisive action against its own members, but that is precisely where institutional integrity and credibility are tested. This decisiveness is important to show the public that the police have no tolerance for violent acts, particularly those that take lives, especially that of a child,” he said.

Nevertheless, Rano strongly condemned the violent actions committed by First Class Private MS. He deemed the conduct a serious violation of both the law and the code of ethics.

“Such behaviour constitutes a serious violation that wounds humanitarian values and the sense of justice. Police officers are given authority by the state to protect the public, not the opposite,” he asserted.

Rano also expressed condolences to the victim’s family whilst stressing the importance of state presence in ensuring legal protection and justice. He further commended the Police Chief’s direct attention to the handling of the case, including the deployment of a Special Cases team from the Police Inspectorate General.

“We specifically commend the Police Chief’s decision to deploy the Special Cases team from the Police Inspectorate General, as well as the assistance from the Professional and Security Division at National Police Headquarters and the involvement of external oversight bodies. This demonstrates that the police are opening layered channels of supervision to ensure the process is conducted transparently, objectively, and accountably,” he said.

Furthermore, the National Awakening Party politician argued that the ethical sanction of dismissal alone is insufficient. He urged that First Class Private MS be subjected to full criminal proceedings to ensure justice for the victim.

“A dishonourable discharge is an administrative and ethical consequence, but criminal accountability must proceed. There must be no impunity in cases resulting in loss of life. Whoever the perpetrator may be, they must answer for their actions before the law fairly and openly,” Rano said.

The National Awakening Party faction treasurer added that Commission III would continue to oversee the handling of teenager AT’s death as part of its supervisory function over law enforcement. Commission III will ensure that legal proceedings are conducted transparently and that public trust in the police institution is maintained.

“We want to ensure that justice is truly upheld, that the victim’s family receives maximum legal protection, and that legal proceedings proceed without intervention. Public trust is a principal asset that must be safeguarded through decisiveness, transparency, and consistency in law enforcement,” he said.
