The head of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Habiburokhman, has affirmed that the commission will closely oversee the legal proceedings in the tragic death case of Nizam Sapei (12), a child from Sukabumi who is suspected to have died as a result of torture by his stepmother, TR. He conveyed this during a Public Hearing Session (RDPU) at the Nusantara II Building, Senayan, on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Habiburokhman instructed the Sukabumi Police Chief to ensure that the investigation proceeds professionally. He emphasised that justice for the victim and biological family must be the primary priority.

“Commission III requests that the entire investigation and prosecution process be conducted transparently. There must be no grey areas in this matter, nothing must be concealed,” stated Habiburokhman.

In the hearing, the legal team representing the victim’s biological mother, Mira Widyawati, presented a distressing chronology. Beyond the alleged torture by the stepmother, the family suspects elements of neglect committed by the biological father during Nizam’s time living with them.

The legislator from the Gerindra Party faction emphasised that investigators must explore all possible legal violations, including the application of provisions under the Child Protection Law and the Criminal Code with maximum penalties.

“The authorities must work carefully and communicate case developments clearly to the public to prevent wild speculation in society,” added Habiburokhman.

In addition to pressing for firm sanctions, Habiburokhman also encouraged guarantees of protection for key witnesses. This step is considered crucial so that testimonies are given freely from intimidation or pressure from certain parties.

Habiburokhman assured that he would request regular reports from the police until the case proceeds to trial and obtains permanent legal certainty.

“Law enforcement must serve justice, especially when it concerns children’s right to life and safety. We will continue to monitor developments,” he concluded.
