Hotels and restaurants get health certificates
JAKARTA (JP): Thirty-six hotels, restaurants and catering
services received health certificates from the city
administration yesterday.
Fauzy Bowo, the head of the City Tourism Agency, said at the
Kartika Chandra Hotel in Jakarta that the certificates, presented
by Deputy Governor of Economic Development Tb. Rais, would help
boost tourism in the capital.
"We want healthy, clean restaurants and catering services to
keep the city attractive to tourists," he said.
Agency records show that 14.17 percent of foreign tourist
expenditure and 17.15 percent of local tourist spending in 1994
were on food and beverages.
The city enjoyed Rp 818.9 billion (US$372 million) in food and
beverage revenues in 1994.
Fauzy added that restaurants and catering services in the city
should try to promote Indonesian foods and beverages.
Officially, Jakarta has 99 certified restaurants, hotels and
catering services.
Rais said that the system of certifying hotels, restaurants
and catering services, which started in 1993, is part of the
administration's efforts to promote a greater public awareness of
hygiene.
Criteria
Certification criteria include a sanitary building, equipment
and environment as well as healthy workers that maintain a tidy
appearance.
In yesterday's ceremony, the deputy governor also awarded
special health certificates to the owners of four canteens
located in the East and South Jakarta mayoralties, at West
Jakarta's Kebon Jeruk public health center and at the Pademangan
district head's office in North Jakarta. (29)
