Hotel uses students with disabilities
NUSA DUA: Sheraton Laguna Nusa Dua has searched far and wide to find the best candidate for every staff position.
That extends to Sekolah Luar Biasa (schools for the physically challenged), where qualified and dedicated new workers were recently discovered.
Four deaf-mute students are employed for the current peak season as daily workers in the food and beverage department. Ni Made Sari is working in the kitchens and receiving section; Dewa Ayu Alit Setyawati is a cutlery dishwasher; Dading Kalbuhadi is a steward and Yudi Kurniawan is training in the pastry pantry.
The four high school level students are incredibly happy with their work and say they were made to feel welcome by their resort colleagues. They hope to achieve permanent employment status after their three-month daily worker stint.
"These young people have done very well and quickly overcame obstacles in understanding orders. They are shy, but their confidence is growing through contact with guests in the hotel area," said Sheraton Laguna human resources director Erika Isnijati.
The employment program is a part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts' policy toward community commitment. --JP
