YOGYAKARTA - During the 2026 Eid holiday period, hotel occupancy in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has declined compared to the same period last year.

Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) DIY, Deddy Pranowo Eryono, stated that this year’s hotel occupancy has not improved over last year and tends to be lower.

“It tends to decline; for the period from 16 March to 22 March, the average is 40% to 65%. Meanwhile, last year it was 60% to 75%,” Deddy said when contacted on Tuesday (24/3/2026).

On the other hand, Head of the Yogyakarta City Cultural Heritage Area Management Unit, Fitria Dyah Anggraini, reported that the number of tourist visits to Malioboro during the 2026 Eid holiday from 18 March to 22 March totalled 137,722 visits.

She detailed the number of tourist visits to Malioboro on 18 March 2026 as 13,951, then on 19 March 9,364, 20 March 33,529, 21 March 23,903, and 22 March 56,975.

“This (visit data) is only counted at five entry points to Malioboro, namely East Zero Point, West Zero Point, Suryatmajan, North BPD, and in front of D’Jogja hotel. Counting starts from 08:00 to 24:00,” she said.

From preliminary data as of Tuesday (24/3) at 09:00 WIB, the arrival volume in Daop 6 is still classified as high, recorded at 36,068 passengers.

Meanwhile, the departure volume recorded 35,732 passengers boarding trains from the Daop 6 region. These figures are still dynamic as ticket sales continue until midnight.

She added that the predicted 2026 Eid return flow is today, but based on current data, the peak of this return flow has the potential to shift.

“Preliminary prediction of the peak return flow will occur today, but it still has the potential to shift along with the government’s appeal for the public to stagger the return flow to 25-26 March and the ongoing work-from-home policy until 29 March 2026,” she said.
