Jakarta — The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has recorded a significant decline in room occupancy rates (TPK) for classified star hotels in January 2026 compared to the previous month, with declines occurring both month-on-month and year-on-year.

Ateng Hartono, Deputy of Statistics for Distribution and Services at BPS, reported that the TPK for star-classified hotels in January 2026 reached 47.53 per cent. “The TPK for star-classified hotels in January 2026 reached 47.53 per cent, or a month-on-month decline of 8.59 percentage points,” Ateng stated during a BPS press conference on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Year-on-year, occupancy also weakened. “On a year-on-year basis, occupancy also declined by 0.85 percentage points,” he added.

BPS noted that when compared to December 2025, declines occurred across all provinces. “All provinces experienced a decline in star hotel TPK in January 2026 when compared to December 2025,” Ateng emphasised.

According to him, the decline was influenced by seasonal factors following the end of the extended holiday period at year-end. “The decline in star hotel TPK in general tends to be influenced by the end of the peak season for Christmas and New Year holidays. December had Christmas and New Year holidays, and January’s figures reflect the impact on TPK,” he explained.

Additionally, weather conditions also affected tourist movement. “There were also extreme weather conditions in January that are believed to have influenced the decline in activity and tourism visits to stay at star-rated hotels,” Ateng noted.

Despite the national decline, several regions still recorded relatively high occupancy rates. Bali was the province with the highest star hotel TPK in January 2026. “The highest star-classified hotel TPK can be seen in Bali Province at 56.67 per cent, followed by West Kalimantan at 52.61 per cent, and in third place, Jakarta Special Capital Region at 52.50 per cent,” he explained.

BPS also noted that in general, star hotel occupancy rates remain higher compared to non-star hotels and other accommodation across almost all provinces. “Star hotel TPK across all Indonesian provinces is higher when compared to non-star hotel TPK,” he concluded.
