Hong Kong takes squash titles

JAKARTA (JP): As expected, Hong Kong took both the men's and women's singles titles yesterday in the East Asian Squash Championships at the Pertamina squash court in Simprug, South Jakarta.

In an all-Hong Kong final, top seed and world number 36 Abdul Faheem Khan routed Jackie Lee 9-3, 9-2, 9-3 to win the men's individual title. In the women's individual final, Dawn Olsen wore down Japanese newcomer Yuko Kimura 9-5, 9-4, 9-1.

Veteran Tan Tian Huat of Malaysia made short work of Hong Kong's Wong Wai Hung 9-0, 9-7, 9-3 to take the third spot in the men's singles. Finishing third in the women's division was Christina Bonoan of the Philippines who beat teammate Elizabeth Wilcox 4-9, 9-2, 9-1, 9-4.

The team events start this morning and end on Sunday.

In the women's event, Indonesia takes on Japan at 10:30 a.m. and Singapore takes on Malaysia at 4:00 p.m.

The men's team event starts with Singapore meeting Japan, and Malaysia facing South Korea at 10:00 a.m. At 4:00 p.m. the Philippines plays Indonesia and Hong Kong tackles South Korea. (arf)
