The expansion of cross-border digital payment systems continues to be promoted by Bank Indonesia through the implementation of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). Following its application in several Asian countries, the cross-border QRIS expansion now reaches China with support from GoPay. This step is part of Bank Indonesia’s (BI) initiative to broaden economic access through the integration of cross-border digital payment systems. Indonesian citizens travelling to China can now conduct transactions using QRIS by scanning QR codes from local payment networks such as Alipay and UnionPay via Indonesian digital payment applications, including GoPay. Head of GoPay Wallet, Kelvin Timotius, stated that the use of cross-border QRIS demonstrates an increasing trend in various countries that have previously adopted the system. “Cross-border QRIS payments via the GoPay application have shown significant growth in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan. Now, GoPay is ready to support QRIS transactions or payments in China,” Kelvin said in a written statement on Tuesday (5/5/2026). “GoPay continues to actively support Bank Indonesia’s efforts to expand the reach of cross-border QRIS, including the latest expansion to China. We remain committed to providing users with an easy, secure, and affordable transaction experience, both for domestic and international needs,” Kelvin added. The presence of this cross-border payment system is seen as providing convenience for Indonesians, especially when abroad. Users no longer need to exchange cash and can obtain exchange rate transparency during transactions. The system enables micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and merchants in Indonesia to receive digital payments from foreign tourists. Thus, economic activities in the national tourism sector have the potential to be further encouraged through the ease of transactions offered by the digital payment system. Kelvin also highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation in strengthening the national digital economy ecosystem. “Ever-widening cross-border cooperation will continue to drive financial inclusion and strengthen Indonesia’s digital economy ecosystem, as well as become a reliable solution for Indonesians in carrying out various activities abroad,” he stated.
