Holding Steady at Around Rp85,000 per Kg, Prices of Bird's Eye Chillies in Cianjur Gradually Decline
The prices of bird’s eye chillies in Cianjur Regency, West Java, are still considered relatively high. However, they are now gradually declining compared to levels just before Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.
At Muka Market, for instance, the current price of bird’s eye chillies hovers around Rp85,000 per kilogram. Previously, prices had surged to over Rp100,000 per kilogram.
The head of the Muka Market UPTD, Asep Hermawan, stated that the drop in prices for this commodity is likely due to decreasing demand. Additionally, supplies from farmers to traders are beginning to normalise.
“The decline has indeed occurred gradually after Eid. It’s still quite expensive now, at around Rp85,000 per kg. The price hasn’t returned to normal yet, which is usually an average of Rp60,000-Rp70,000 per kilogram,” said Asep on Wednesday (8/4).
Asep explained that several factors have caused the recent rise in bird’s eye chilli prices, particularly leading up to Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. One key reason is the tendency for increased demand.
“Combined with weather factors. Extreme weather conditions have significantly impacted farmers’ harvests, reducing yields. As a result, prices have risen in the market,” he clarified.
Meanwhile, prices of other commodities remain fairly stable at present. Demand has not increased significantly.
“Traders hope prices can return to normal. Because the rise doesn’t bring profits; instead, traders suffer losses. They struggle to sell, even if stock is secure,” he concluded. (H-2)
Meanwhile, green bird’s eye chillies, which previously averaged around Rp49,400 per kg, have risen to Rp52,200 per kg.
Poor weather over the past few months has notably affected production, leading to reduced supply. On the other hand, public demand has tended to increase.
Bird’s eye chillies are known for their high spiciness due to the active compound capsaicin.
Additionally, the price increases for bird’s eye chillies and green vegetables are caused by limited supply as a result of extreme weather.
BPS recorded inflation in December 2025 at 0.64 percent (mtm). The food, beverages, and tobacco group, particularly bird’s eye chillies and chicken meat, were the largest contributors.
This chilli belongs to the Solanaceae plant family and is widely used as a cooking spice in various countries, especially in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.
Even though prices have declined, consumers still consider them quite expensive.
