Hoax! Police Chief clarifies that 30 kg of methamphetamine evidence evaporated due to extreme weather
Jakarta – A Facebook post featured an image of Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri), and asserted that the police had clarified that 30 kilograms of methamphetamine (sabu) evidence had disappeared because it dissolved or melted due to extreme weather. The post claimed that extreme weather could cause meth to dissolve and vanish into the air, with figures suggested to reach five to six tonnes. The accompanying narration stated that the evidence could disappear on its own due to the weather, provoking questions about narcotics evidence oversight.
The Police’s Public Relations Division (Divisi Humas Polri) later clarified that the claim about the Kapolri clarifying the loss of 30 kilograms of methamphetamine due to weather is a hoax. “This is misinformation,” said Public Relations Director General Johnny Eddizon Isir, as reported by ANTARA.
ANTARA’s checks using search terms like “barang bukti sabu meleleh” or “barang bukti sabu menguap” did not find any official police statement about the disappearance or dissolution of meth evidence due to weather. The police also urged the public to verify information before sharing.
Therefore, the narrative that 30 kilograms of meth evaporated due to extreme weather is unfounded.
