PB HMI says escalation of military conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran could trigger chain reactions affecting global security stability, including Indonesia. PB HMI conveyed its hopes to the government.

“War in the Middle East region is not just a regional conflict. In a globally interconnected security system, every military escalation has strategic implications that can affect the stability of other countries, including Indonesia,” said Rifyan Ridwan Saleh, Head of the Defence and Security Law Division of PB HMI, in a written statement, Thursday (5 March 2026).

PB HMI notes several potential domino effects that Indonesia needs to anticipate. First, disruptions to global energy stability due to tensions in the Middle East, one of the world oil distribution centres. Indonesia’s dependence on energy imports makes fluctuations in global oil prices potentially pressure the national economy. Second, increased geopolitical tension may affect international maritime security.

He said Indonesia, as an archipelagic state on world strategic trade routes—such as the Strait of Malacca, the Sunda Strait, and the Lombok Strait—has direct interests in safeguarding global shipping lane security.

“Disruptions to regional stability can raise maritime security risks, ranging from trade route disruptions to increased military activity in the Indo-Pacific,” said Rifyan.

In addition, PB HMI reminds of potential domestic social impacts, particularly related to the emergence of extremism narratives or ideological polarization that often exploit international conflicts as propaganda tools.

According to him, national stability must be maintained through strengthening public geopolitical literacy, monitoring digital propaganda, and adopting a moderating approach in responding to international conflicts.

PB HMI emphasises that Indonesia’s stance in facing global geopolitical dynamics must remain founded on the constitution. The preamble of the 1945 Constitution states that Indonesia has a responsibility to participate in world order based on independence, eternal peace, and social justice.

“Independent and active foreign policy must be realised through active diplomacy, contribution to world peace, and strengthening regional cooperation in maintaining global security stability,” said Rifyan.

As a nation-building organisation, Rifyan also emphasised PB HMI’s commitment to building public awareness of international geopolitical dynamics. HMI also encourages strengthening intellectual discourse among the younger generation about the relationship between global conflicts and national resilience.

He also hopes the Indonesian government can continue to strengthen national readiness, both in diplomacy, economy, energy, and defence, to anticipate potential impacts of increasingly complex global conflicts.

“Global conflicts should remind us that national resilience is not only determined by military power, but also by economic, energy, and social stability. Indonesia needs to prepare for evolving geopolitical dynamics,” said Rifyan.
