History of Hongqi, China's Presidential Car Set to Enter Indonesia
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indomobil Group plans to bring the Chinese automotive brand Hongqi to the Indonesian market. The presence of this brand is expected to liven up the premium vehicle segment, especially amid growing interest in cars from China. For some Indonesians, the name Hongqi may still sound unfamiliar. However, in its home country, this brand has a long history and is closely tied to symbols of statehood. The name “Hongqi” itself means “Red Flag”, representing the spirit of nationalism and national identity. According to Autodeal, in its early days, Hongqi was not produced for the public. Its cars were used exclusively for state purposes, such as vehicles for high-ranking government officials and state guests. In other words, Hongqi has been positioned from the start as a symbol of prestige and power. The first model that became a milestone in Hongqi’s history is the Hongqi CA72. This sedan was introduced in the late 1950s as the official state vehicle. The Hongqi CA72 was produced in very limited numbers, around 198 units. It is powered by a 5.6-litre V8 engine producing 210 hp. Its large and rigid design reflects the character of state vehicles at that time. Over time, Hongqi began to transform. From initially producing only ceremonial vehicles, Hongqi has now developed into a premium automotive brand targeting general consumers. This luxury sedan was first introduced in 2014 and became the successor to the classic state vehicle Hongqi. With a length of more than 5.5 metres and a 6.0-litre V12 engine producing around 400 hp, this car still retains its exclusive aura.
