In addition to major markets such as the United States and Europe, we also encourage our members to explore opportunities in new markets such as the Middle East and Africa. Jakarta — The Indonesian Furniture and Handicrafts Association (HIMKI) is optimistic that exports of the national furniture industry can reach US$6 billion per year within the next five years, in line with the large potential of the global furniture market and support from international exhibitions.

HIMKI chairman Abdul Sobur, in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Friday, said that the domestic furniture and crafts sector continues to play an important role in the economy.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) indicates that furniture exports contributed 12.2 percent of the handicrafts sub-sector, showing that the furniture sector remains a key pillar of Indonesia’s creative products exports.

Growth opportunities for the global furniture industry are still seen as very large. Referring to Allied Market Research, the world furniture market is projected to reach more than US$1,160 billion by 2034, up from US$736 billion in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2 percent.

“We are confident that the global furniture market will continue to improve in the coming years. Therefore, we reiterate our target to realise exports of US$6 billion. In addition to major markets such as the United States and Europe, we also urge our members to open opportunities in new markets such as the Middle East and Africa,” Sobur said.

He noted that one of the international exhibition supports that could spur domestic furniture exports is the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX), held at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Banten, 5-8 March.

The exhibition is regarded as one of the drivers of national furniture exports, as it is a global business-to-business (B2B) platform that brings together industry players and buyers through various business matching activities.

Moreover, amid global geopolitical dynamics, the IFEX organisation ensures that conditions in Indonesia remain safe and stable so the exhibition can proceed as planned.

“In today’s global environment, strong partnerships and reliable market access are increasingly important,” Sobur said.

He added that HIMKI continues to engage with participants and international buyers to ensure the comfort and smooth running of the exhibition.

Meanwhile, Acting Director General of the Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) Putu Juli Ardika, at the opening of IFEX 2026 at ICE BSD on Thursday, 5 March, stated that IFEX positively impacts the furniture industry market.

On that occasion, the ministry also highlighted Indonesia’s Manufacturing Value Added (MVA) achievements, topping the ASEAN region at US$265.07 billion.

The Ministry of Industry also provides various facilities to support growth of the national furniture industry, in addition to exhibition facilitation. These facilities include raw materials provision, upgrading skilled human resources, increasing productivity and product capacity and quality, strengthening market access and market research, creating a conducive business climate, and developing small and medium industrial centres (IKM) in furniture.

The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) notes that the value of Indonesian furniture and handicraft exports to world markets reached US$2.22 billion, or Rp36.07 trillion, from January to November 2024.
