Here It Is: The Form of KRI Canopus-936, Indonesia's First Submarine Rescue Vessel
KRI Canopus-936, an ocean-going auxiliary hydro-oceanographic vessel (BHOD-OG) featuring modern technology, is designed to strengthen national maritime survey, mapping, and data management capabilities. It arrived at the Kolinlamil Dock in Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026) after a 57-day voyage from Germany to Indonesia. As Indonesia’s first submarine rescue vessel, KRI Canopus-936 is armed with various cutting-edge technologies, including the Hydrographic Survey Launcher (HSL), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Beyond its rescue functions, the vessel plays a vital role in military operations, such as mapping submarine routes, detecting sea mines, conducting security patrols, and providing maritime intelligence support. It is capable of performing underwater search and rescue (SAR) missions to detect emergency signals or submerged objects. KRI Canopus-936 is the product of a strategic collaboration between the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) and PT Palindo Marine, achieving a Domestic Component Level (TKDN) of up to 60%.
