Heavy Rainfall Causes Land Subsidence and Mosque Damage
Heavy rainfall that fell over recent days has caused land subsidence and a mosque to collapse.
Land subsidence occurred in a residential area in Ketanggungan Village, Wirobrajan District, Yogyakarta on Sunday, 1 March at approximately 5:00 am. The subsided area measured approximately 3 by 2 metres.
The Head of the Yogyakarta City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Nur Hidayat, explained that preliminary findings suggest the land subsidence was triggered by intense heavy rainfall. “The impact affected one kitchen building quite severely due to the land beneath it subsiding,” he stated.
Previously, on the evening of Tuesday, 24 February, in Bantul Regency, Adzikri Mosque in Sriharjo Village, Imogiri District, was damaged. The mosque building was situated on the bank of the Oya River.
The Head of Bantul BPBD, Mujahid Amruddin, stated that the mosque was damaged due to river bank erosion caused by heavy rainfall and swift river flow. As a result, the mosque collapsed because the land beneath it was eroded. “There were no casualties,” he said.
