The controversy over land owned by PT KAI in strategic areas has resurfaced. This time, the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, Maruarar Sirait, became involved in a direct debate with community figure Rosario de Marshall, alias Hercules.

This incident occurred during an inspection of the land in the Tanah Abang area, which has long been known to be managed by certain community groups.

During his visit, Maruarar emphasised the government’s firm stance on reclaiming state assets, particularly PT KAI land that is deemed not to be utilised in accordance with regulations.

He stressed that many state assets are controlled without permission and must be returned for the public interest.

“There is a great deal of state land controlled by other parties. We will take it back for the interests of the state and the people,” Maruarar asserted firmly.

This statement became the starting point of the debate, given that the land has been managed by parties claiming to have a social role in the area.

In the dialogue, which was quite heated, Hercules finally stated that he had no objection if the land was indeed state property.

However, his statement also reflected a bargaining position and the reality on the ground.

“If it is indeed state property and needed, I will hand it over today,” said Hercules.

Although it sounded compromising, the dynamics of the debate showed a tug-of-war of interests between the legality of state assets and de facto control by certain groups.

Maruarar reiterated that Indonesia is a state of law, so no party may control state assets without a legal basis.

“We must have the courage to manage the state and uphold the truth,” he emphasised.

The government also assured that the land would be redirected for the development of people’s housing, particularly high-rise flats for low-income communities.

This land reclamation step is part of the government’s broader strategy to optimise state assets, especially those owned by PT KAI, which are spread across major cities such as Jakarta and Bandung.

The planned project includes hundreds of affordable housing units, both for ownership and rental by the public.
