Healthy Finances Amid the Onslaught of Contemporary Socialite Lifestyles

ON SOCIAL media timelines, life appears perpetually vibrant. Invitations to dine together, small celebrations in aesthetic cafes, and short holidays seem to form the normal rhythm of living. The socialite lifestyle, once synonymous with a select few, now permeates the urban middle class and productive generation. However, behind this social bustle lies a question rarely asked honestly: to what extent can our finances truly sustain it? This question becomes pertinent as indicators of consumer debt show worrying trends. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) records that by February 2026, outstanding online loans have surpassed Rp100 trillion, growing more than 25 percent annually. Concurrently, buy now pay later (BNPL) credit and credit cards are also rising rapidly, particularly in urban areas. This means consumption is increasingly supported by debt, rather than balanced earning capacity. It is unfair to view the socialite lifestyle merely as consumptive behaviour. Social life has an important function: building networks and maintaining mental health. The problem arises when social relations shift into spaces of representation. Presence is no longer just about meeting, but also about displaying social position. Social media accelerates this shift. Financial realities are often neatly edited. What appears is the lifestyle. INDEF economist Tauhid Ahmad reminds that consumer debt is an entry point to a cycle of problems. “The danger of online loans is that most are used for consumption, not productive activities. In the end, people get trapped in a cycle: payday to pay off debt, then borrow again,” he said in an interview with the media in October 2025. It is here that the concept of financial health finds its urgency. Financial health is not just about accumulating assets, but about the skill to manage life choices—including in socialising. It demands the ability to set boundaries and dare to differ from the mainstream.
