Head of National Food Agency States National Food Balance is in Surplus and Secure
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Head of the National Food Agency (Kabapanas) and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that the availability of strategic national food is projected to be in surplus, despite facing increasingly complex global challenges and the potential for El Niño.
Amran said that international geopolitical dynamics and climate change are the main factors affecting food production and distribution, thus requiring anticipatory measures to maintain national supply stability.
“Based on the national food balance projection until May 2026, the availability of strategic national food commodities is in surplus and relatively secure,” said Amran during the Working Meeting of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Despite facing these various challenges, the government ensures that the national food balance remains well maintained and able to meet the needs of the community adequately and sustainably.
Based on the projection, several major commodities are experiencing significant surpluses, including rice reaching 16.39 million tonnes and corn at 4.3 million tonnes until the period of May 2026.
In addition, other commodities such as consumer sugar recorded a surplus of 632,000 tonnes, chicken meat 837,000 tonnes, and chicken eggs reaching 423,000 tonnes.
The government also ensures the availability of food reserves through Perum Bulog, which currently has stocks reaching 4.6 million tonnes as part of efforts to maintain national stability.
On the price side, overall food conditions are relatively controlled during the fasting month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, although some commodities were temporarily above the highest retail price (HET), but still within reasonable limits.
Food inflation also shows a positive downward trend, from previously 2.5 percent to 1.58 percent in March 2026, indicating improving price stability.
Furthermore, Amran said that in maintaining food stability, Bapanas is carrying out various strategic steps, including the formation of the 2026 Saber Food Violation Task Force; distribution of SPHP rice and corn;
Subsequently, distribution of food assistance to 33.2 million beneficiary families (KPM); implementation of the Cheap Food Movement (GPM) on a massive scale; facilitation of distribution from surplus to deficit areas; and strengthening price monitoring through the national food price panel.
