Hasjim eyes Uzbekistan cotton-spinning plant

JAKARTA (JP): Businessman Hasjim Djojohadikusumo, through his company PT Prima Komexindo, plans to build a cotton-spinning factory in Uzbekistan with an investment of almost US$30 million.

Hasjim was reported yesterday by Antara as saying that a feasibility study was being conducted, soon to be followed by the construction of the facility. The news agency did not state when the construction was scheduled to begin.

Hasjim said the feasibility study would cover aspects such as transportation between Uzbekistan and Indonesia and assess what facilities would be provided by the Uzbekistani government to investors in that country.

He said that the cotton thread to be manufactured by the spinning plant would be sold to companies in Indonesia. Uzbekistan is a major cotton producer.

Hasjim said many Indonesian companies, such as those owned by the Bakrie Group, Texmaco and Rajawali Nusantara, have expressed interest in investing in cotton-spinning factories in Uzbekistan. But so far, he said, only Prima Komexindo has come forward with a concrete investment plan. (pwn)
