Hashim Reveals Attempts to Exploit People's Housing Quota
Jakarta — Hashim Djojohadikusumo, chairman of the task force for accelerating housing development, has revealed that certain parties have offered to exploit the housing quota allocated for ordinary citizens. This disclosure comes as the government is currently constructing three million subsidised housing units across Indonesia.
Hashim made the statement during the inauguration of vertical housing development at Manggarai Station in Jakarta on Monday, 16 March 2026. In his remarks, he emphasised that quality must be a priority in public housing development.
“We must not disappoint our people,” said Hashim, adding that he had heard from Public Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait about cases of misappropriation in public housing projects.
Hashim acknowledged hearing reports of widespread mark-up practices on government housing projects and urged relevant ministers to strengthen oversight mechanisms.
“To be candid, someone told me, ‘Mr Hashim, we could make a profit in strategic locations. We could request a quota of one thousand or five hundred apartments and then sell them for five times the profit’. Someone said that to me. I’m bearing witness to this. Such practices must not occur,” he stated.
During the event, Hashim also cautioned state-owned enterprises (SOEs) that the land they hold belongs to the people and must not be sold at market prices.
“It is impermissible. That would be wrong. That land is specifically for subsidies for ordinary people and housing. There are clear guidelines. I say candidly that certain parties want to profit by applying market valuations,” said Hashim.
He also commended the Ministry of Defence for allocating 41 hectares of land in Kampung Berlan, Matraman District, Jakarta, for public housing development. The Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology also contributed land donations, including 30 hectares in Kemayoran and 45 hectares in Depok.
