Hantavirus Looms: 23 Cases Detected in Indonesia, 13% Fatality Rate
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) has recorded 23 cases of hantavirus in Indonesia during the period from 2024 to 2026.
The Head of the Bureau of Communication and Public Information of Kemenkes, Aji Muhawarman, stated that out of the total cases, three patients have died.
With that number, the case fatality rate (CFR) for hantavirus in Indonesia stands at 13%.
Based on Kemenkes data, out of 251 suspected cases examined, 23 cases were confirmed positive.
Of that number, 20 patients have recovered, while three others have died.
Meanwhile, in 2024, one case was recorded, and so far in 2026, there are five cases.
Member of the House of Representatives’ Commission IX, Netty Prasetiyani, has called on the government to increase vigilance and strengthen early detection systems following the emergence of hantavirus cases in several regions of Indonesia.
Netty stated that the report from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) RI, which records at least 23 hantavirus cases with three deaths over the past three years, should not be taken lightly.
This politician from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has urged the Ministry of Health to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance system and the preparedness of health facilities, especially in areas already identified as having cases.
