Hanan: Gen Z Farmer Raising 110 Goats in a Housing Estate
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – In the midst of a housing estate in Bekasi Regency, West Java, 21-year-old Hanan has chosen an unconventional path.
While many of his peers pursue office jobs, Hanan has built a modern goat farm now housing around 110 goats within a housing estate.
The farm, started by Hanan around 2022 on his parents’ former plantation land, features elevated wooden pens measuring 10 x 12 metres, divided into sections based on goat type.
“Based on my father’s advice and my own research, goat pens should be built elevated so the animals don’t step in their own waste,” Hanan said during an interview on Friday, 22 May 2026.
The elevated design allows waste and urine to fall below, keeping the pens dry and clean. The flooring is also slatted to prevent waste accumulation.
Hanan explained that the waste is not discharged into the canal behind the pens. “The ground beneath is left as soil so dried waste turns into compost or natural fertiliser. Hence, even with a capacity of up to 100 goats, the pens remain odour-free,” he said.
Initially, the pens could only accommodate around 50 goats; now the capacity has increased to approximately 110.
Building a farm in a housing estate was not easy for Hanan. He admitted receiving questions from neighbours when starting the goat pens in the housing estate.
“When first constructing, some residents raised concerns—not outright complaints, but questions about why a farm was being built in a housing estate,” Hanan said.
