Hajj Flight Costs Rise by Rp1.77 Trillion, Ministry of Hajj Seeks DPR Approval
Minister of Hajj and Umrah Irfan Yusuf has reported that Hajj flight costs are increasing from Rp6.69 trillion to Rp8.46 trillion, or by Rp1.77 trillion. The man familiarly known as Gus Irfan explained that the increase is due to rising aviation fuel prices and currency fluctuations exerting significant pressure on the Hajj flight financing structure for the year 1447 Hijriah and 2026 CE. “The rise in aviation fuel prices and currency fluctuations are putting significant pressure on the Hajj flight financing structure for the year 1447 Hijriah and 2026 CE, so Garuda Indonesia has proposed an increase of up to 974.8 billion and Saudi Airlines 802.8 billion,” said Gus Irfan during a meeting with the DPR RI’s Commission VIII on Tuesday, 14 April 2026. According to him, Garuda Indonesia proposed an increase of Rp974.8 billion, while Saudi Airlines proposed Rp802.8 billion. “In aggregate, the total cost jumps from 6.69 trillion to 8.46 trillion, or an increase of 1.77 trillion,” he revealed. Nevertheless, President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised that the cost increase will not be borne by the pilgrims. Currently, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is coordinating with the Attorney General’s Office to ensure the force majeure status and the legality of additional funding sources. “The Hajj flight funding sources are based on the provisions in Article 44 and Article 45 of Law Number 14 of 2025 on the Third Amendment to Law Number 8 of 2019 on the Implementation of Hajj and Umrah Worship, stating that the flight cost component is sourced from the Hajj Organisational Fee (BPIH),” he explained. Therefore, he is requesting approval from the DPR RI’s Commission VIII regarding the determination of the Hajj flight cost increase. “We hope that at this working meeting with the DPR RI’s Commission VIII, it can be approved and decided regarding the amount and funding sources to meet the cost adjustment,” said Irfan.
