Jakarta, VIVA – Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, Habiburokhman, affirmed that his commission did not intervene in the Batam District Court regarding the case of a crew member of the Sea Dragon Terawa, who was carrying 2 tons of methamphetamine.

Six defendants, including the crew member named Fandi Ramadhan, face the death penalty in this case.

“We reiterate that we did not intervene in the court,” said Habiburokhman during a meeting concerning the death penalty faced by Fandi Ramadhan in the meeting room of Commission III of the DPR RI, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Habiburokhman explained that his commission is only accountable to the public regarding the allocation of the budget for the Supreme Court (MA) and all its ranks.

He wants the budget allocation to have a positive impact on law enforcement in Indonesia.

“But we must be accountable to the public; the state budget allocation that we approve for the Supreme Court and its subordinates must bring about improved performance,” he said.

Previously, it was reported that the Public Prosecutor of the Batam District Attorney’s Office, Riau Islands, stated that they would still seek the death penalty for the six crew members of the Sea Dragon Terawa who were carrying nearly 2 tons of methamphetamine.

The death penalty is still being sought despite criticism from the Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, Habiburokhman.

This statement was made by the Public Prosecutor during the prosecutor’s response to the defendant’s defense plea (replique) at the Batam District Court on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

“In principle, we, as the public prosecutor, remain with the criminal charges that have been read on Thursday, February 5, 2026,” said Public Prosecutor Muhammad Arfian during the trial.

The six defendants, including two Thai citizens, Teerapong Lekpradube and Weerepat Phongwan, and four Indonesian citizens, namely Fandi Ramadhan, Richard Halomoan, Leo Candra Samosir, and Hasiholan Samosir, face the death penalty by the Public Prosecutor of the Batam District Attorney’s Office.

In his replique, the Public Prosecutor stated that he had made every effort to prove that the defendants, including Fandi Ramadhan, had been proven guilty of committing drug crimes.

The Public Prosecutor rejected all the defendants’ defenses presented by their legal counsel and requested that the panel of judges examining and deciding the case reject the defendants’ defense and decide the case as in the first primary indictment of the public prosecutor, namely the death penalty.
