Gunungkidul-Klaten Route Reopened, Residents Warned of Further Landslide Risk
The Clongop road connecting Gunungkidul to Klaten has reopened following the clearance of landslide material that had previously blocked the route. However, residents have been advised that should heavy rainfall occur, they should use alternative routes to avoid the risk of secondary landslides.
Eko Krisdiyanto, sub-district head of Gedangsari, stated that debris clearance work on the new Clongop road had been completed and the road is now fully open to traffic. “The clearance of landslide material has been completed and the new Clongop road is now fully open,” he said when contacted on Tuesday 10 March 2026.
Despite the full reopening, Eko urged residents to remain vigilant whilst using the road. Heavy rainfall could potentially trigger secondary landslides. “Residents are advised not to use the new Clongop road during heavy rain, particularly at night, as secondary landslides are possible,” he stated.
Eko indicated that residents can access alternative routes via Sampang or Mertelu villages should heavy rain occur on the Clongop road. “Residents can use the alternative route through Sampang or Mertelu villages if heavy rain occurs on Clongop,” he added.
The clearance effort followed a secondary landslide that occurred just days earlier on the new Clongop road in Gedangsari, Gunungkidul. The Wedi-Gedangsari road was subsequently passable only by motorcycle. “There was indeed a secondary landslide on the new Clongop road. It occurred last night,” said Purwono, head of the Gunungkidul Disaster Management Agency, on Sunday 8 March 2026.
The secondary landslide occurred at the site of an earlier landslide on Tuesday 3 March 2026, with rocks and earth falling onto the road. “It had just been cleaned when another landslide occurred. However, there were thankfully no casualties or injuries from last night’s secondary landslide,” Purwono said.
Officers have since conducted assessments and cleared the landslide material, whilst also felling trees deemed at risk of falling. “The Wedi-Gedangsari road is currently passable by motorcycle, but vehicles must still use alternative routes via Jelok Road and Sampang Road,” he stated.
