Gunawan is mentally sound, say police

Damar Harsanto, The Jakarta, Jakarta

Gunawan Santosa, the prime suspect in the July 19 murders of PT Aneka Sakti Bakti (Asaba) president director Boedyharto Angsono and his bodyguard, is mentally fit, a police officer said on Friday.

"A psychiatrist tested him (Gunawan), and the psychiatrist told me that Gunawan is mentally fit and can give a statement to police investigators," Jakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Mathius Salempang said city police headquarters.

Salempang said police investigators did not believe the psychiatric evaluation was necessary, but agreed to at the insistence of Gunawan's lawyer, Farhat Abbas.

Farhat had said his client was suffering from depression and required psychiatric care.

Police want to question Gunawan about the murders of Boedyharto and his bodyguard Second Sgt. Edy Siyep, a member of the Army's Special Forces, as well as the attempted murder of PT Asaba finance director Paulus Tejakusuma on June 6.

Also implicated in the case are four marines who are suspected of carrying out the murders and attempted murder on Gunawan's orders.

The marines, who have been detained by the Navy's Military Police since July 31, have been identified only as Second Lt. SAS, Second Corp. SR, Second Corp. FH and First Pvt. SS. All four are members of Marine Infantry Brigade 2 based in Cilandak.

Navy chief Adm. Bernard Kent Sondakh said on Thursday Navy officials hoped to question Gunawan to cross-check the statements of the four marines.

Salempang said the police would make Gunawan available if he was needed to complete the dossiers on the marines.

"We have a good relationship with the Navy. We have no problems with that," Salempang said.

In related development, Governor Sutiyoso said the subdistrict heads of Gunung Sahari and Kemayoran in Central Jakarta and Pademangan in North Jakarta were not connected to the three counterfeit identity cards found on Gunawan at the time of his arrest.

According to the governor, the signatures on the three IDs were not those of the subdistricts heads.

"The subdistricts heads were not involved in the process of making the IDs. Gunawan counterfeited their signatures," Sutiyoso said on Friday.

The governor said on Thursday the three subdistrict heads had been questioned about the counterfeit IDs.

At the time of his arrest, Gunawan was carrying three ID cards with the names Kevin Martin, Indra Amapta and Dustin Bakrie.
