NEW YORK – The UN Security Council has formally adopted a resolution proposed by Bahrain and Gulf states condemning Iran’s attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Jordan. The resolution passed with 13 votes in favour. Russia and China abstained.

Bahrain submitted the resolution on behalf of GCC member states—comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—as well as Jordan. Co-sponsored by 135 countries, the resolution emphasises “strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence” of GCC and Jordanian states.

The resolution strongly condemns “the heinous attacks perpetrated by the Islamic Republic of Iran” against Gulf states and Jordan, and emphasises that these attacks “constitute a violation of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security.”

The resolution also condemns the targeting of civilian infrastructure, which “has resulted in civilian casualties and damage to civilian buildings.”

Bahrain’s UN envoy Jamal Fares Alrowaiei welcomed the adoption. “This demonstrates that the Council is committed to maintaining international peace and security.”

“We express our heartfelt gratitude to all UN member states that co-sponsored this resolution. Their number reaches 135 countries. This extraordinary support from the international community reflects our collective awareness of the danger posed by Iran’s unjust attacks on our countries,” he stated.

Iran’s representative objected to the resolution. “The decision is clearly unjust towards my country, which is the primary victim of clear and unambiguous acts of aggression,” said Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani.

“The decision distorts facts on the ground and ignores the root causes of the current crisis,” he continued.

“Attacks against us began with the assassination of the Supreme Leader and officials, resulting in the deaths of thousands of victims.”

Iravani stated that more than 1,348 civilians have been killed and over 17,000 wounded since the US and Israel launched attacks on 28 February. Over 19,000 civilian locations, including homes and hospitals, have also been damaged, according to Iran’s representative.
