Guess What: Ully Sigar Rusady

Happiness, pride, restless and sadness were all in singer and environmentalist Ully Sigar Rusady when she received a prestigious state award for her contributions in the environment preservation.

"Of course, I was happy. But I was also sad because of the critical condition of our environment," she told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

A day earlier Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri, on behalf of President Abdurrahman Wahid, gave her the Bintang Jasa Pratama for her efforts to preserve the environment through various activities including the Pandu Lingkungan Indonesia (Indonesian Environment Drive), and her songs.

"I can create the programs, but they won't work without the support from all my friends," said Ully, 48, the chairwoman of Garuda Nusantara Foundation.

Ully, whose real name is Rulany Indra Gartika Rusady Wirahaditenaya, in 1985 set up the foundation that aims to encourage young people the environment conservation.

A talented singer who has recorded a number of albums with theme of environment, she is dubbed the Indonesian Joan Baez. (sim)
