Growing living costs
Growing living costs
From Merdeka
We were informed recently that Indonesia's population has now
reached 200 million souls. State Minister of Population/Chairman
of the National Family Planning Board Dr. Haryono Suyono had been
anticipating the birth of the country's 200 millionth citizen.
The 200 millionth baby was named by the President himself. It
was, of course, a joyful event for all of us.
However, we should not forget that with the country's
population at 200 million, the public's daily demands are also
increasing. This does not just cover clothing, food and housing
alone, but also various necessary material and nonmaterial
aspects. It becomes more apparent that we will need more ideas
and guidance to meet these demands. We can just imagine what is
going to happen if we fail.
We are experiencing a continuous increase in living costs,
even though the economic growth has shown a higher level. It does
not mean that everybody is enjoying a piece of the development
cake. The Government has revealed that part of the Indonesian
population still lives below the poverty line.
A better policy of sufficiency with a clear direction is
called for to make the development program a success, to ensure
that public welfare programs be materialized and the quality of
the people's lives are improved.
With a population of 200 million, we are spurred to work
harder and to stop the easy working style if we do not want to be
marked as a poor nation. Since we are entering the globalization
era -- in which openness should become more apparent -- more
innovative efforts and new motives are required so that we will
not lag behind other nations.
