Growing living costs<\/p>\n

We were informed recently that Indonesia's population has now
\nreached 200 million souls. State Minister of Population\/Chairman
\nof the National Family Planning Board Dr. Haryono Suyono had been
\nanticipating the birth of the country's 200 millionth citizen.<\/p>\n
The 200 millionth baby was named by the President himself. It
\nwas, of course, a joyful event for all of us.<\/p>\n
However, we should not forget that with the country's
\npopulation at 200 million, the public's daily demands are also
\nincreasing. This does not just cover clothing, food and housing
\nalone, but also various necessary material and nonmaterial
\naspects. It becomes more apparent that we will need more ideas
\nand guidance to meet these demands. We can just imagine what is
\ngoing to happen if we fail.<\/p>\n
We are experiencing a continuous increase in living costs,
\neven though the economic growth has shown a higher level. It does
\nnot mean that everybody is enjoying a piece of the development
\ncake. The Government has revealed that part of the Indonesian
\npopulation still lives below the poverty line.<\/p>\n
A better policy of sufficiency with a clear direction is
\ncalled for to make the development program a success, to ensure
\nthat public welfare programs be materialized and the quality of
\nthe people's lives are improved.<\/p>\n
With a population of 200 million, we are spurred to work
\nharder and to stop the easy working style if we do not want to be
\nmarked as a poor nation. Since we are entering the globalization
\nera -- in which openness should become more apparent -- more
\ninnovative efforts and new motives are required so that we will
\nnot lag behind other nations.<\/p>\n
