PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero), operating as InJourney, has officially revived the legendary hotel at the main gateway of Malioboro Street by restoring its historic name as Grand Hotel De Djokja. This milestone marks a new chapter in the resurgence of one of Indonesia’s most iconic heritage-oriented hotels, which has stood since 1911.

The restoration of the Grand Hotel De Djokja name represents more than a simple rebranding exercise; it is a strategic move to recover the hotel’s historical identity whilst strengthening its position as a cultural landmark and world-class destination in the heart of Yogyakarta.

InJourney Chief Executive Officer Maya Watono stated that the revitalisation of Grand Hotel De Djokja forms part of InJourney’s strategic initiative to present Indonesia’s image through the strengthening of cultural identity and national heritage as the principal foundation for developing national tourism.

According to her, InJourney does not merely construct destinations but instead weaves together a distinctive tourism ecosystem that elevates Indonesia’s noble values, ensuring that every asset under its management becomes a representation of national pride whilst also functioning as a world-class attraction.

“As the holding company for aviation and tourism state-owned enterprises, InJourney has a mandate not only to manage assets but also to revive historical significance and national identity. Grand Hotel De Djokja is a symbol of Indonesia’s long journey. Through this revitalisation, we want to ensure that this heritage is not only preserved but also remains relevant and competitive on a global level, thereby serving as a catalyst for strengthening Yogyakarta’s and the nation’s tourism,” Maya stated on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

The hotel, which was established in 1911, ranks among the oldest and most prestigious hotels in the Malioboro area. Throughout its history, the hotel has undergone various name transformations, including Hotel Asahi (1942), Hotel Merdeka (1948), Hotel Garuda (1950), Natour Garuda (1975), Inna Garuda (2001), and Grand Inna Malioboro (2017), before finally returning to its original name as a form of honouring Yogyakarta’s historical roots and cultural heritage.

Grand Hotel De Djokja also played a significant role in the nation’s history. During the period 1945-1946 when Yogyakarta served as the capital of the Indonesian Republic, several rooms in the hotel functioned as the headquarters of the People’s Security Army under the leadership of Supreme Commander General Soedirman. One of these historic spaces is now preserved as the “Sudirman Suite” (Room 291), which still houses historical artefacts.

The hotel’s revitalisation falls under the management of InJourney Hospitality, an InJourney subsidiary, as part of the holding company’s strategic portfolio in developing historic national hotels.

InJourney Hospitality Chief Executive Officer Christine Hutabarat added that this transformation aligns with a strategic initiative to revive The Heritage Collection, elevating Indonesia’s historic hotels into hospitality destinations that offer comfort alongside authentic narratives, identities, and cultural experiences.

“We believe that the resurgence of Grand Hotel De Djokja will serve as an important catalyst in strengthening Yogyakarta’s tourism ecosystem. More than simply a lodging establishment, we present this hotel as a cultural destination, a luxury landmark, and a meeting space for creativity, business, and global tourism in the heart of Malioboro,” Christine explained.

Grand Hotel De Djokja officially began welcoming guests on 16 March 2026 through a soft opening phase with a special rate of IDR 1,911,000 net per room per night, including breakfast for two persons. The figure 1911 represents the year the hotel was established, simultaneously affirming the commitment to preserving historical continuity and the future.

This opening coincided with the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, making it a distinctive choice for tourists seeking to enjoy a stay at the legendary hotel in the centre of Yogyakarta.
