Govt to resettle fire victims

JAKARTA: Central Jakarta Mayor Hosea Petra Lumbun offered
alternative sites for low-cost apartments to resettle hundreds of
residents of Kebon Melati, whose houses were gutted by fire last
week.

"We could build the apartments here, but the land belongs to
state railway operator PT KAI. If the company refuses to provide
the land, then we have alternative sites in mind, in West
Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta," he was quoted as saying
by Detikcom news portal on Monday, while visiting the victims.

At least 1,170 residents of the densely populated Kebon Melati
subdistrict are now staying in makeshift shelters in the area. --
