Governor Reveals Earthquake Effects in North Sulawesi: Sports Hall Damaged - 2 Dead
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - North Sulawesi Governor (Ret.) Maj. Gen. TNI Yulius Selvanus Komaling has revealed the impacts of the tectonic earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale in the province’s waters this morning. He made the statement during a virtual press conference on Thursday (2/4/2026).
“After the incident this morning, we have tried to gather information from each regency and city, including checks by the regional military command,” he said.
According to him, the most fatal effect of the earthquake was the damage to the KONI sports hall. The boxing and basketball facilities were the most severely affected.
“The others include 25 houses with minor damage. In terms of rupiah, this amounts to approximately 500 million,” Yulius stated.
“But this sports building is perhaps fatally flawed; it has collapsed twice due to earthquakes. Two years ago, it collapsed from a 5.2 magnitude quake, let alone this 7.6,” he continued.
There were also two fatalities. “Coincidentally, this woman was underneath it. And the other one jumped from the second floor. Up to today, we are still conducting further data collection,” Yulius said.
