Governor charged with corruption
BANDUNG, West Java (JP): Around 100 members of the West Java branch of the Islamic Youth Movement (GPI) staged a protest here Monday, demanding investigation into the alleged embezzlement of billions of rupiah by Governor R. Nuriana. The peaceful rally on the grounds of the council was followed by a meeting with councilors.
Among other charges, the governor was accused of being responsible for the overestimated costs of councilors' homes.
GPI spokesman Zaky Robby Cahyadi said demonstrations would continue if the Governor failed to quit by May. Councilors said the demands would be conveyed to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Also on Monday several artists, including Tisna Sanjaya, took to the streets and the council grounds. They carried five large statues, including one by Tisna, in a rally against violence urging the maintenance of a "moral movement". (43)
