JAKARTA - A member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Yudha Novanza Utama, has urged the government to press the United Nations (UN) not to adopt a passive stance regarding the incident in which three TNI soldiers were killed in Lebanon.

He assessed the attack on peacekeeping forces carrying out the UN mandate as a serious violation of international law.

“We encourage the government to pressure the UN not to be passive and to immediately take concrete steps to ensure the security of peacekeeping forces, including conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the mandate and security system for the UNIFIL mission,” Yudha stated in his official remarks on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Additionally, he encouraged the government to pursue bilateral diplomatic channels as well as international forums to ensure maximum protection for TNI soldiers serving in conflict areas.

“This incident must serve as a momentum for Indonesia to strengthen its position and voice in promoting respect for international humanitarian law, while ensuring that every sacrifice of Indonesian soldiers in global peacekeeping missions is not ignored without clear accountability,” Yudha said.

The incident brings the number of fallen TNI soldiers to three, following the report of one soldier killed in an Israeli attack the previous day.

“In that incident, two TNI soldiers were reported killed, while two others sustained serious injuries. The injured soldiers are currently receiving intensive medical treatment at a healthcare facility in Beirut,” said the Head of the Defence Information Bureau of the Secretariat General of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, in a press release on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

He added that the incident occurred amid escalating combat intensity in the area, and the exact cause is still under investigation by UNIFIL.

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Defence and TNI, continues to coordinate with the UNIFIL headquarters to ensure the safety of all personnel and to guarantee the best handling for the victims.

“Evacuation and medical handling measures have also been carried out swiftly in accordance with United Nations (UN) operational procedures,” Rico stated.
