Government Urged to Evaluate National Railway Safety and Security System
JAKARTA - Abdul Hadi, a member of Commission V of the DPR, has urged the government to evaluate the national railway safety and security systems.
He stressed that the train accident involving the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek and the KRL Commuter Line at Bekasi Timur Station must be viewed as a serious matter.
He emphasised the need for a thorough evaluation, particularly in aspects such as signalling, train journey protection, and level crossing security.
“This incident reaffirms that public transportation safety must be the top priority. This is not just an accident, but a signal of potential systemic problems that must be addressed immediately,” Hadi stated in his comments on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
Specifically, he encouraged the closure of level crossings, which are one of the high-risk points in the national railway system.
The accident between the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek and the KRL Commuter Line is part of a series stemming from a vehicle stalling at a level crossing.
“The entry of vehicles onto the tracks causing the KRL to stop is a serious issue. This shows that level crossing security is still weak and highly risky. There must be a total evaluation, from infrastructure, supervision, to road user discipline,” Hadi said.
He also pushed for the closure of high-risk level crossings, the acceleration of flyover and underpass construction in dense corridors, and the strengthening of law enforcement through electronic ticketing systems for drivers who force their way through.
In addition, he stressed the importance of accelerating the implementation of safety technologies such as Automatic Train Protection (ATP).
The system aims to ensure that trains can stop automatically in the event of potential hazards or signal violations.
“Safety cannot rely on one factor. There must be a strong layered system, from technology, infrastructure, to user discipline,” Hadi said.
The second accident occurred when the KRL heading to Jakarta–Cikarang was stopped at Bekasi Timur Station. At the same time, the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek from Surabaya collided with the KRL train on Monday (27/4/2026) night.
The accident resulted in 14 deaths based on data as of Tuesday (28/4/2026) at 08.45 WIB. The deceased victims have been taken to RS Polri Kramat Jati for further identification.
Treatment of victims is being carried out at several health facilities, including RSUD Bekasi, RS Bella Bekasi, RS Primaya, RS Mitra Plumbon Cibitung, RS Bakti Kartini, RS Siloam Bekasi Timur, RS Hermina, as well as RS Mitra Keluarga Bekasi Timur and Barat.
