Government to Issue Free Trade License for Ports

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesian Authority is planning to issue a free trade license for five ports in three free trade zones. Port and Excavation Director at the Transport Ministry, Cholik Kirom, said the license will come into effect in January 1st 2009.
The ports are Lobang Port in Bintan, Citra Nusa Kabil, Sekupang, and Batu Ampar Ports in Batam, all in Riau Islands Province, and Tanjung Malarko Port in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra Province.
The original plan was to issue the license for 25 port in different parts of the country, enabling all the ports to conduct export-import. The government is working to complete licenses for the rest 20 ports although no targetted time frame revealed.
The five ports to operate international trade although the government is yet to complete drafting on new regulation on ports and is planning to set up port authority body by mid May next year.
