Government to Conduct Health Checks for Bus Drivers Ahead of Mudik Season to Reduce Accident Rates
Jakarta – The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK), Pratikno, disclosed that the government has implemented a free health check (CKG) programme for bus drivers in advance of the Lebaran 2026 mudik season. The health screening is being conducted as a strategy to reduce accident rates.
“One of the matters we are taking seriously, overseen by the Ministry of Health, is free health screening for bus drivers,” Pratikno stated at a press conference at the Presidential Staff Office in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March 2026. “This is our strategy to reduce and lower fatality rates,” he added.
Pratikno explained that bus drivers’ health will be assessed two weeks before they transport homebound travellers, allowing time for any identified health problems to be addressed before the mudik period.
To date, 338 drivers from 18 bus operator pools at terminals in Central and West Java have completed the free health check, with Pratikno noting that the numbers will continue to grow.
The screening includes blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, alcohol testing, and tests for narcotics, psychotropic substances, and other addictive substances. Pratikno highlighted that blood pressure is a primary health concern requiring attention amongst bus drivers.
“Drivers deemed fit are authorised to operate; those who do not meet requirements will receive treatment until they satisfy the safety standards required for driving,” he explained.
