The government targets the completion of railway line construction on Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi by 2045. This was stated by the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), during a coordination meeting he led at Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 22 April 2026. He revealed that the total length of lines to be built is 14,000 kilometres (km). In Sumatra, the existing track length reaches 1,871 km. In the future, an additional 7,837 km of lines will be constructed. “One quick win is the Banda Aceh-Besitang route (around 400 km) to connect Aceh to North Sumatra,” said AHY. In Sulawesi, the total existing lines reach 109 km, spanning South Sulawesi. However, additional lines are still needed to reach other provinces. “In the future, an approach is needed for resource-rich regions like Central Sulawesi (nickel, Morowali) and Southeast Sulawesi through schemes involving industry players (downstreaming),” stated AHY. For Kalimantan, he mentioned that there is currently no public railway. According to him, the required railway lines are at least 2,700 km for commodity logistics, mining, and to reduce the burden on highways.
