Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has emphasised that the government has never increased the price of 3 kilogram (kg) subsidised Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), even since the programme was first implemented in 2006-2007.

According to him, the price of 3kg LPG set by the government remains the same to this day. However, if price increases occur in the field, they do not stem from government policy but from price manipulation at the distributor and depot levels.

“But for 3kg LPG, since it was implemented in 2006 or 2007, up to now, we have never raised the price from the government side. What happens is that prices are manipulated by distributors and depots. That’s roughly it,” he said at the Ministry of ESDM in Jakarta on Monday (20/4/2026).

He added that the government had previously attempted to streamline the distribution of subsidised LPG to ensure it reaches the rightful recipients. This effort was undertaken in early 2025 when the government set the subsidised LPG price at around Rp17,000 to Rp18,000 per cylinder to be acceptable to the public as per regulations.

Nevertheless, in practice, the price of subsidised LPG was found to soar to around Rp25,000 per cylinder in several regions.

“That time, I wanted to properly regulate so that the subsidy truly goes to those who are entitled. With the price that has been properly set. What price did we set then? Rp17,000 to 18,000. But there were some that reached Rp25,000 at that time. But when we tried to enforce it, all sorts of things happened, but anyway, it’s in the past. Now the important thing is that Hormuz is fine,” said Bahlil.

Meanwhile, regarding the price increase for non-subsidised LPG effective 18 April 2026, he explained that the prices for 5.5kg and 12kg non-subsidised LPG are adjusted according to market mechanisms.

Clearly, he continued, as the government, they guarantee that the price of 3kg subsidised LPG will not increase.

“I say that what the government regulates and can guarantee the price won’t rise is the subsidised one. While the non-subsidised is used by industry, restaurants, hotels. So we don’t regulate its price; it adjusts to the market price. That’s it,” he stressed.

As is known, PT Pertamina (Persero) has officially increased the price of non-subsidised Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for 5.5kg and 12kg cylinders. This price adjustment has been effective since 18 April 2026 throughout Indonesia.
