The Indonesian government is preparing various measures to maintain beef price stability in the domestic market, particularly as the Ramadan to Eid period approaches, when demand typically surges. One of the government’s primary focuses is ensuring adequate supply of cattle ready for slaughter whilst keeping prices stable for business operators.

Agung Suganda, Director-General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that price stability depends not only on distribution but also on adequate supply from both domestic production and imports. The government is implementing various policy instruments to ensure supply security and prevent price spikes at the consumer level.

According to Agung, the government is working to ensure a smooth supply chain for beef from feedlots, animal slaughterhouses, and markets. This effort is being conducted through oversight and inter-ministerial coordination to prevent supply shortages.

“Our strategy to maintain prices includes guaranteeing the availability of cattle ready for slaughter from both local sources and imported stock,” Agung told CNBC Indonesia on Monday, 16 March 2026.

In addition to ensuring live cattle supply, the government is also maintaining frozen beef reserves as a supply buffer for the market. This measure is considered important to anticipate the surge in demand that typically occurs during certain periods.

“We are guaranteeing the availability of frozen beef through issuing import recommendations in accordance with the allocations determined in inter-ministerial coordination meetings,” he said.

Agung added that the government is also monitoring price stability at the upstream level to prevent triggering price increases downstream. Price control at feedlots and animal slaughterhouses is one of the key points for maintaining stable beef prices in the market.

“We are guaranteeing a maximum price for cattle ready for slaughter of IDR 55,000 at feedlots and IDR 56,000 at slaughterhouses to maintain carcase price stability at slaughterhouses and markets,” he explained.

He stated that various measures are being implemented simultaneously to ensure supply remains secure whilst providing price certainty for business operators and consumers.

Agung emphasised that the government continues to monitor price developments in the field and ensures all policies are implemented in line with the objective of maintaining market stability.

“We are continuously implementing these measures to ensure supply remains secure and beef prices in the market remain stable,” said Agung.
