JAKARTA - The government is preparing a roadmap to transition all two-wheeled vehicles in Indonesia to electric-based ones. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy for energy transition while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the policy direction reflects the direct wishes of President Prabowo Subianto, who is pushing for the transformation of the national transportation sector.

“The President’s desire is very clear that all vehicles going forward will be electric-based,” Agus said at the Kompas Tower on Thursday (6/4/2026).

Agus stressed that the transition to electric vehicles is no longer an option but a pressing necessity, given the growing pressures on fossil energy.

“Now, the importance of this is becoming increasingly apparent, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. So, there is no other choice; we must convert to electric,” he explained.

“Therefore, the government is now preparing the necessary regulations,” he added.

As an initial step, the government will focus on accelerating the production and use of electric motorcycles domestically.

“At the very least, we can start with electric motorcycles, where existing manufacturers in Indonesia immediately prepare their production capacity,” Agus said.

He emphasised that in the future, motorcycle sales for the domestic market will be directed entirely towards electric-based ones.

“We want all motorcycle sales in the domestic market to be through electric motorcycles,” he asserted.

“Motorcycles that are still conventional-based can continue to be produced, but we will direct them for export, for example, to Africa, the Middle East, and South America,” Agus said.

He added that this strategy allows the industry to keep operating while giving business players time to adapt.

“There is no need to stop the production of conventional motorcycles, but we must start strengthening the production capacity for electric motorcycles,” he stated.

“We are currently drafting a roadmap so that all motorcycles used by consumers in Indonesia are electric-based. China has already succeeded; they are already electric-based motorcycles,” he revealed.

Regarding incentive support, Agus said the government is still discussing matters with the Ministry of Finance, particularly for electric two-wheeled vehicles.

“We are talking with the Ministry of Finance, specifically for incentives on electric motorcycles,” he emphasised.
