Government Prepares Five SEZ Locations
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Minister of Industry, M.S. Hidayat, has said that five locations have been prepared for special economy zones (SEZ) including in the eastern part of Sumatra, West Java's north coast road (Pantura), eastern part of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Merauke in Papua.
“There will be a food estate in Merauke,” said Hidayat at his office, on Friday (6/11).
He explained that there were several conditions that had to be fulfilled when a region wishes to become a special economic zone.
It should have industrial clusters, a harbour for export activity, and certain infrastructure.
During the next five years, Hidayat explained, government will push for new factories of the food and drink industry to be established in Merauke. It is reported that Merauke will have a new raw sugar factory.
A food estate is a concept of food production development with integrated management covering agriculture, plantations and livestock, which are located on a large piece of land.
The outcome from a food estate can contribute to national food security, and if there are excesses, these can be exported.
