JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The government is beginning to promote a work-from-home (WFH) policy as part of its energy-saving strategy amid global pressures. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that this step is part of efforts to maintain economic stability while curbing energy consumption. “The government has established a cultural transformation policy that encourages more efficient, productive, and digital-based work behaviours,” Airlangga said during a press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026). The regulation is outlined in a circular from the Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs. The private sector is also encouraged to follow a similar scheme. The arrangements are delegated to each sector through a circular from the Ministry of Manpower. “The implementation of work from home for the private sector will be further regulated through a circular from the Minister of Manpower, while still considering the characteristics and needs of each business sector,” Airlangga said. The government is also promoting the use of public transport. “Mobility efficiency, including a 50 percent restriction on the use of official vehicles, and encouraging the use of public transport,” he said. Official travel is also being reduced. Domestic travel is cut by up to 50 percent. Overseas travel is reduced by up to 70 percent.
