JAKARTA - The government will implement a work-from-home (WFH) policy or working from home for one day per week for civil servants (ASN) and encourage it for the private sector after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2026. This policy is believed to suppress oil fuel (BBM) consumption amid global energy price fluctuations. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa estimates that implementing WFH could save around 20 percent of BBM usage per day, although the figure is still a preliminary estimate. This work flexibility policy is prepared as a response to supply disruptions and high world oil prices due to conflicts in the Middle East. The government hopes this step can help energy efficiency while maintaining domestic economic stability. Nevertheless, Purbaya emphasised that WFH will only be applied one day per week, considering work effectiveness. “WFH, however, sometimes there are things that cannot be done well with WFH,” he said. Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto assured that the technical rules for the policy are still in the drafting stage, but implementation will begin after Lebaran. “WFH will be detailed, but after Lebaran we will enforce it,” Airlangga stated at the same location. The implementation of WFH will also be coordinated with the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure effective application across various sectors. The government hopes that, besides saving energy, this policy can also serve as an adaptive step to face global pressures without disrupting national productivity.
