Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polkam) is evaluating airport security systems in the Papua region following the recent shooting of a Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft, registered as PK-SNR.

The aircraft, owned by PT Smart Cakrawala Aviation, was operating the Tanah Merah–Danawage/Koroway Batu route.

The matter was discussed in a coordination meeting themed "Threats to National Air Security and Public Facilities in the Papua Region," held at the Kemenko Polkam building in Jakarta on Friday.

"The government has taken swift, measured and coordinated steps by conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the aviation security system in Papua," the ministry said in an official press statement received by ANTARA.

As a consequence of the evaluation, the government has temporarily closed a number of airports in Papua to ensure the safety of flight crews and the public.

The closures are also intended to provide space and time for the strengthening of security measures by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri).

Deputy for the Coordination of National Defence and National Unity at Kemenko Polkam, Major General Purwito Hadi Wardhono, emphasised during the coordination meeting that the government will always be present in protecting the public and various vital installations, including airports.

The government, he said, will not bow to any armed group threatening public security and will thoroughly investigate such incidents in accordance with prevailing law.

At the close of the meeting, Purwito affirmed that the state is always present and working to ensure Papua remains safe and conducive.

"Security stability in Papua is a primary prerequisite for the delivery of public services, the continuity of development, the strengthening of connectivity, and the preservation of the unity and sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," he said.

With this coordination meeting, he expressed hope that regional security systems, particularly at airports in Papua, would be further strengthened to create security stability.
