JAKARTA - State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the government will continue intensive communication and coordination to allow tanker ships of PT Pertamina (Persero) to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

Nevertheless, he affirmed that the detention of two Pertamina-owned tanker ships does not disrupt domestic fuel availability.

“We continue to engage in communication. But please do not link it to the negotiation process as if it will disrupt supply stocks. It’s not like that,” Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (9/4/2026).

Prasetyo explained that the amount of oil in the detained tankers is around 1.8 million barrels, equivalent to the government’s 1-2 day reserves.

He stated that the government is striving to maintain fuel availability by optimising domestic resources and importing from other sources.

His side is still exploring cooperation with other countries regarding oil.

However, Prasetyo declined to disclose the sources of fuel from which countries the government will pursue.

“We will announce it in due time. The important thing is not to worry about from which country; the key is that stocks are safe. We ensure safety based on calculations, of course,” Prasetyo emphasised.

Previously, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the government is continuously communicating intensively with Iran regarding the two Pertamina ships that have yet to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

On the other hand, he stressed that domestic fuel stocks remain secure.

“The total crude we take from the Strait of Hormuz—we don’t import finished fuel from the Middle East; it’s only crude. The crude accounts for about 20-25 percent,” he said on Wednesday.

For information, PT Pertamina International Shipping is endeavouring to have its two ships in the Arabian Gulf cross the Strait of Hormuz.

This step is taken amid news of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The two ships are the VLCC Pertamina Pride, carrying crude oil for domestic needs, and Gamsunoro, serving consumer cargo.

“Both PIS ships currently in the Arabian Gulf are still being facilitated to cross the Strait of Hormuz,” said Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS Vega Pita in his statement on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
