The government is refining a policy to implement work-from-home (WFH) for one day per week across various business sectors. There are specific criteria for business sectors that cannot adopt WFH, including those directly involved in public services. “This applies to civil servants (ASN) and is a recommendation for the private sector, particularly those not related to public services,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, as quoted by detikfinance on Monday (23/3/2026). The WFH policy is scheduled to take effect after the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holidays. The technical implementation is currently being studied by the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Home Affairs. “It will be detailed, but after Eid we will proceed,” Airlangga emphasised. On another occasion, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the policy will also apply to certain business fields that allow remote work. “To avoid misunderstanding, for example, the service, industrial, and trade sectors may not be included in this policy,” Prasetyo said at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta last Saturday. This WFH policy stems from the President’s directive during the full cabinet plenary session before the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holidays, as an effort to promote efficiency in the work environment, including reducing the need for fuel amid heightened tensions in the Middle East conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel. “As conveyed by the President during the cabinet plenary session, we are formulating several policies to realise that we all must collectively become more efficient in our work,” Prasetyo said. Nevertheless, he stressed that the policy is not due to any disruption in Indonesia’s fuel supply. “As we have continuously stated, insyaallah there are no issues with fuel supply; the fuel supply is secure,” he affirmed.
